WHOA! Can you believe that title?! I would have NEVER imagined I’d be living in Nashville, Tennessee and attending graduate school at Vanderbilt University if you had tried to tell me that 5 years ago… What an immense blessing!!
A little about my program- you already know it is an intensive 12 months (August 2017-August 2018). Regular full time graduate students take 9 credits per semester. This fall I’ll be taking 13 credits, next spring I’ll be taking 12 credits, and next summer I’ll be taking 6 credits (in addition to writing my thesis). There are a mixture of required and elective classes during each academic term, as you would expect. Here are the classes I’m taking this fall:
- (required) Literacy Development
- (required) Literacy Assessment & Professional Development
- (required) Diverse & Special Needs Learners
- (elective) Advanced Social & Philosophical Aspects of Education
- (elective) Social & Psychological Foundations of Adolescent Literacies

My practicum placement is at a local high school! I am the only high school person in my cohort of 9 people, so I am very thankful I have this placement 🎉 We haven’t yet flushed out the details of when I’ll be in the school, but I’m looking forward to it 👍🏻
In addition to all that, I also have a Teaching Assistant position for this fall!! Woooohoooo! I will be helping with an undergraduate class called Fostering Language in Diverse Classrooms. This afternoon I met with the professor in person for the first time to get acquainted and talk about the basics of the course.
